Understanding knee pain
Knee pain is one of the most common orthopaedic problems and affects people of all ages. It may develop gradually with arthritis and ageing, or suddenly after a sports injury, accident or fall.
Mild knee pain often improves with rest, ice and medication. However, if pain persists for several days, causes swelling, stiffness or instability, makes walking difficult or limits your daily activities, an expert orthopaedic evaluation becomes essential. At Globus Hospital, our advanced orthopaedic and robotic joint-replacement team provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for all types of knee disorders.
Common causes of knee pain
1Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis)
As protective cartilage wears out, walking and stairs become painful, with swelling, stiffness and, in advanced stages, deformity. Early treatment can slow progression significantly.
2Meniscus tear
A sudden twist or age-related wear tears the knee’s shock-absorbing cushion, causing locking, catching, swelling and difficulty fully bending or straightening.
3Ligament injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)
Sports injuries, twists or falls tear stabilising ligaments, causing severe pain, swelling, instability and a "giving way" sensation. ACL injuries are common in athletes.
4Water on the knee (effusion)
Excess fluid from arthritis, injury or infection causes swelling, tightness and painful, restricted movement.
5Knock knees (genu valgum)
Inward-bending knees that touch while standing can cause abnormal walking patterns and premature arthritis if untreated.
6Stress fractures
Tiny cracks from repetitive strain, overtraining, weak bones or poor footwear, with pain that worsens during activity.
7Patellar tendon injury
Runner’s or jumper’s knee causes pain below the kneecap, weakness and difficulty climbing stairs, jumping or running.
8Patella instability
A kneecap that slips out of position, common in young adults, causing sudden pain, instability and recurrent dislocations.
9Sprains and strains
Stretched or torn ligaments (sprain) or muscles and tendons (strain), usually from sport, exercise or accidental twisting.
10Joint dislocations
Bones forced out of position by trauma, with severe pain, deformity and loss of movement. Immediate care prevents permanent damage.
11Hamstring injuries
Injury to the muscles at the back of the thigh, with a pulling sensation, bruising, weakness and difficulty walking or running.
12Tibial plateau fracture
A fracture of the upper shinbone near the knee, often from falls or accidents, which can cause long-term instability if untreated.
Advanced knee pain treatments
Knee injections
Modern injections reduce pain and inflammation and improve joint lubrication. Options include corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid injections, PRP therapy and regenerative-medicine treatments, used for arthritis, meniscus and ligament injuries and early degenerative changes.
Arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery
Arthroscopy lets our surgeons diagnose and treat knee problems through very small incisions, which means less pain, minimal scarring, faster recovery and early mobilisation. Common procedures include meniscus repair, ACL reconstruction, ligament repair and cartilage treatment.
ACL reconstruction
ACL reconstruction restores knee stability after a ligament injury. The damaged ligament is reconstructed using specialised grafts and advanced arthroscopic techniques, helping patients return to sport, rebuild strength and prevent future instability.
Robotic knee replacement
For severe arthritis or advanced joint damage, knee replacement provides long-lasting pain relief and restored mobility. At Globus Hospital we provide robotic-assisted knee replacement for greater precision: accurate implant positioning, better ligament balancing, minimal tissue damage, faster rehabilitation and improved long-term implant performance.
- Total knee replacement. Damaged cartilage and bone are replaced with advanced implants, relieving chronic pain, restoring walking and correcting deformity.
- Partial knee replacement. When only one compartment is affected, a smaller surgery preserves more natural movement with faster recovery and less blood loss.
- Revision knee replacement. A specialised procedure to replace older implants that have loosened, worn out or become infected, restoring proper function.
