Preparing for your knee replacement
- Consultation Dr. R. K. Singh examines your knee, reviews your X-rays and explains whether surgery is right for you, which system (MISSO or ROSA) suits your knee and what to expect.
- Fitness tests Blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray and a physician review make sure your sugar, blood pressure, heart and lungs are ready. Patients from other districts can usually finish these on the same day.
- Medicines You are told which medicines to continue and which to pause (for example blood thinners). Do not change medicines on your own.
- Pre-surgery exercises Simple thigh-strengthening exercises before surgery make recovery easier afterwards.
- Prepare your home A western toilet or commode chair, a firm chair with arms, a clear path without loose rugs, and a walker. Keep things you use daily at waist height.
- Plan your stay One family member stays with you. Bring your reports, medicines, loose comfortable clothes and non-slip footwear.
The day before
You will be admitted or asked to come in early on the day, as advised. The team checks your tests, marks the knee to be operated, and explains the fasting time: usually no food for about six to eight hours before surgery. If you have a fever, cough, any infection or a wound on the leg, tell the team, because surgery may need to wait until it settles.
Surgery dayWhat happens on the day
- MorningFinal checks, an antibiotic before surgery, and a talk with the anaesthetist.
- AnaesthesiaUsually spinal or epidural anaesthesia, so your legs are numb and you feel no pain; you may be given medicine to relax or sleep.
- Zero Error surgeryIn a modular theatre with laminar airflow and HEPA filtration, your knee is mapped, the plan is refined, and robot-guided cuts are verified by navigation before the implant is fixed and the ligaments are balanced. Usually about one and a half to two hours.
- Recovery areaYou are watched closely as the anaesthesia wears off, with regular pain relief so you stay comfortable.
- Back to your roomYour family can be with you. Ankle and breathing exercises begin.
- First stepsMost patients stand and take their first steps with a walker within a day of surgery, guided by the physiotherapist.
Safety measures you can count on
Modular theatres, laminar airflow, HEPA filtration. NABH accredited.
Robotic and navigation systems verify alignment and balance.
Critical care support on site if it is ever needed.
Rehabilitation starts in hospital, the day after surgery.
Questions before surgery
Which tests are needed before knee replacement?
Usually standing X-rays of the knees, blood tests (blood count, sugar, kidney function and others), an ECG and a chest X-ray, with an echocardiogram or a physician’s review if needed. Most can be done at Globus Hospital on the day of consultation.
Should I stop my medicines before surgery?
Some medicines, such as blood thinners and certain diabetes medicines, may need to be stopped or changed a few days before surgery. Never stop a medicine on your own; the team will tell you exactly what to do.
Will I be awake during the operation?
Most knee replacements are done under spinal or epidural anaesthesia, so the lower body is numb and you feel no pain. You can be given medicine to stay relaxed or sleep. The anaesthetist discusses the choice with you.
How long does the operation take?
Usually around one and a half to two hours for one knee, including the planning and verification steps. You will spend extra time in the recovery area before returning to your room.
Can a family member stay with me?
Yes. Rooms are attendant-friendly so one family member can stay with you during admission.
